  • XDP Upgrade Promotion – Extended!!! (through 12/31/14

Recently, Volvo Penta announced the launch of a three month XDP Upgrade Program (extending, ending 12/31/14)  that affects all registered Volvo Penta  XDP owners. This program allows registered owners to swap out their XDP drives for either a DPS-B drive and transom shield package or a DPS-B Ocean X drive and transom shield package.  The price for these upgrades is about $4,000 less than the normal price.

The Upgrade Program has a fairly complicated procedure for taking advantage of the offer, but we are here to help you throughout this process. There may be some additional parts that are needed depending upon which XDP and engine model you have, but overall, this is an effective and reasonably priced way to obtain a more dependable drive.

Depending on your model engine and drive, the upgrade package includes:

    • New drive
    • New transom shield kit
    • Conversion kit (which includes trim adaptors and miscellaneous hardware for Early model products)
    • New Y-Pipe and hardware (depending on riser height and model year)
    • Cooling water hose
    • New propeller hubs to re-hub your existing “D” series (aluminum) or “F” series (stainless steel) props.

Both the new DPS-B and DPS-B Oxi have helical spline prop shafts which have been engineered by Volvo Penta which require changing out the hubs on your existing props or purchasing new props. This change created more surface area of splines for the prop to “bite” on the prop shaft resulting in less “slip” and greater performance. Both options take advantage of a full 1-year warranty from Volvo. Both options will also require you to send the old “cores” back to Volvo Penta. The shipping back of these cores is included in the cost of the program.

Whether to take advantage of this upgrade really depends upon the experience you have had with your XDP drive.  Many of the earlier drives had exhaust bellows issues that caused some other related problems.  Some of the drives experienced split housings around the drive shafts that may or may not have been drive manufacturing issues. The skeg of the XDP drive is easily damaged which sometimes can lead to water getting into the drive.  Certain drives have been reported to have gear lash issues that cause premature failure on drives mated to 8.1 liter engine. While other drives have had leaking seals around the drive shafts.

Despite the widespread failures of the XDP, many customers proudly stand behind their drives with little to no complaints. If you choose to stick with the XDP, we have remanufactured units that carry a 1-year warranty, ready to go starting at $6,500.00. We also can rebuild and refurbish your damaged outdrive.

Whatever way you decide to go, whether it is a rebuilt XDP or taking advantage of Volvo’s Upgrade Program, please give us a call with your engine, drive, and transom shield serial #s, and we would be glad to assist you with a quote.

    21849417 DPS-A(B) Oxi -42 deg max trim

    21849418 DPS-A(B) Oxi -32 deg max trim

Note:    Determine if the boat needs a limited trim TSK. Look for the original TSK s/n and see if it was an “LT” limited trim shield. Even if it was not a limited shield from the plant, some OEMs added trim limit. You may want to confirm with OEM or dealer. Ocean X drives require Ocean X TSK kits.

    Order Conversion Parts

Determine the vintage of the original engine package:

    EARLY

4.3 Osi-E or -EF or earlier                2005 MY or eariler- MEFI
5.0 Osi-E or -EF or earlier              2005 MY or earlier- MEFI
5.7 Osi-D or -OF or earlier               2005 MY or earlier- MEFI
5.7 OSXi-D or -OF or earlier          2005 MY or eariler- MEFI
8.1OSi-B or -BF                               2005 MY or earlier- MEFI

*If you have Early product, order Conversion kit – 3889597 (this Includes electrical adapters for trim and assorted hardware)

*Early product has the trim relays on the trim pump assembly. The Conversion kit provides the harnesses and brackets to add a set of relays and wiring that plugs into the new Integrated trim pump on the new TSKs.

*EARLY product will need a new Y-Pipe & bolts.

    LATE

4.3 Osi-F or -FF or later                   2006 MY or later- EGC
5.0 Osi-F or -FF or later                2006 MY or later- EGC
5.7 Osi-E or -EF or later                   2006 MY or later- EGC

5.7 OSXi-E or -EF or later             2006 MY or later- EGC
8.1OSi-C or -CF or later                2006 MY or later- EGC

*Late product will have the trim relays integrated into the engine fuse box. The

XDP trim pump assembly on the Late models are still bilge mounted but have no relays at the pump assembly. When the Ocean X TSK is installed, the bilge mounted trim pump will be deleted and the trim power plug from the engine harness will be plugged directly into the trim pump harness on the new TSK. The only electrical conversion harness needed is for the trim sender connection – p/n – 3885515 and this should only be needed on 2006 MY. 2007 models and newer should have had identical trim sender connections as the SX-A TSK and therefore no adaptor is necessary at all.

*LATE product will not need the whole conversion kit, but you will need a new Y-Pipe & bolts.

     Y-Pipe Selection

    For 8.1Liter engines
