OMC and Volvo Penta Ignition Module (Part No 3854077)
It has come to our attention that a very common ignition module for many Volvo and later model OMC engines has now been listed as obsolete and is no longer in production. The module part number is 3854077. While we have a few 3854077 still in stock, it is becoming increasing difficult to find.
We have good news regarding its replacement.
We have found that 3854077 does have an after market unit that will work as a replacement. It is manufactured by Petronix, and will work on most engines. The part number is IG-1589, and you can order by calling 877.621.2628. Unfortunately, it’s not available through our online store yet, but we are more than happy to take your order over the phone.
The only thing to keep in mind with this, as you can see in the image below, is that you must reset the ignition timing due to the location of the magnetic pickup. Note the location of the pickup on the stock unit versus the magnetic pickup location of the aftermarket.
This may ultimately be a job better suited to your mechanic but should you have any experience tinkering with old muscle cars, this should be easier than attempting to set your points. Should you find yourself in need of a 3854077 and are looking for a cheaper viable option, this fits the ticket.
Both the original 3854077 and the Petronix model have a magnetic pickup which reads from an 8-bladed rotor. The rotor spins on the distributor shaft and is what tells the module when to fire the coil. This means that despite the large difference regarding the pickup position of each type, you will only need to rotate the distributor around 1/8th of an inch or so when going from the original Volvo unit to the Petronix module. This should be done using a timing light to make sure the timing is in the correct position to ensure proper engine function. Your local mechanic should be able to assist you with this. Please also see the installation instruction, below.
